Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is what customers see in Google Maps and search results before they call. For a local service business it often matters more than the website.
Creating your Google Business Profile
- Go to business.google.com with the business’s Google account, not your personal one.
- Enter the exact business name as it appears on your invoices. Do not add keywords to the name: it breaks the rules and can get the profile suspended.
- Choose the most precise primary category (“Plumber”, not “Contractor”).
- If you go to customers rather than receiving them, declare a service area and hide the address.
- Complete the verification Google asks for. It is often done by video, showing your vehicle, tools or workplace.
Optimizing your Google Business Profile
- Secondary categories for each important service.
- Services listed one by one, with a short description.
- Hours, including emergency hours if you have them.
- The website link, ideally to a page repeating the profile’s name, services and towns.
- Real photos of your jobs, added regularly.
- Posts from time to time: a finished job, a seasonal service.
Reviews move the most
The number of recent reviews and your replies weigh heavily. Ask for a review after each job with the direct link, and reply to all. The Google reviews guide explains when and how.
Mistakes that get a profile suspended
- A virtual office or PO box address.
- Keywords or towns added to the business name.
- Two profiles for the same business at the same place.
On Growth, I keep your profile current in your own account as an added manager: you stay the owner. See the Google profile system.
