The complete system from $499/month

A quote template for contractors

A good quote reads in one minute and makes people want to say yes. Here is the template I use, section by section, then what really makes the difference: how the price is presented, and the follow-up.

Version française

How to write a quote: the sections

1. Your full details, your provincial contractor licence number where one applies, and your GST/HST number. 2. The customer, the job address and the date. 3. What will be done, in plain words, line by line. 4. What is not included, to avoid surprises. 5. The price, taxes and total. 6. Timeline and how long the quote is valid. 7. Payment terms, including any deposit. 8. A place to accept.

The price in three options

Instead of one price, offer three levels: essential, recommended, complete. Customers compare your options with each other rather than your price with a competitor’s, and often pick the middle one.

Quoting software: send and follow up

A quote sent the same evening often beats one that arrives three days later. In Crescendo it goes out in three options from your phone, the customer accepts online, and an unanswered one is followed up at three and eight days.

Essential $499/month, or Growth $1,999/month with managed ads and Google profile. Prices in CAD, plus GST/HST. See both plans

Questions

How long should a quote be valid?

You decide, often 30 days. Write it on the quote, especially when material prices move.

Should I ask for a deposit?

For large jobs it is common. State the amount and timing in the payment terms.

How do I follow up without sounding needy?

Two lines at three days with an open question, then a last one at eight days that closes the file.
